EDF installs solar and battery systems for families in Culebra

The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) has successfully completed the installation of solar panels combined with battery storage for 15 families in Culebra, Puerto Rico, on September 10, 2026. This community-based solar initiative aims to deliver clean and reliable energy, particularly for households that rely on electricity for life-sustaining medical equipment. The systems will allow these families to maintain power during outages, ensuring that critical medical devices remain operational and medications can be properly refrigerated.

Daniel Whittle, EDF's Associate Vice President for Resilient Caribbean, highlighted the importance of energy security in Puerto Rico, especially during the ongoing hurricane season. Culebra, as an island municipality, faces unique energy challenges. Its electric infrastructure is more vulnerable to damage, and restoration efforts following severe weather can be complicated and slow compared to those on the main island of Puerto Rico. By leveraging local partnerships, including with Mujeres de Islas and the Foundation for a Better Puerto Rico, EDF aims to enhance energy resilience and community self-sufficiency.

The project also received support from Banco Popular and the Lowenstein Foundation, underscoring the collaborative effort to address energy needs in the area. The solar systems were installed by Power Solar and represent a significant step in expanding access to renewable energy solutions. These 15 households join the 45 families already benefiting from EDF's pilot solar project in Culebra. The initiative not only provides immediate relief but also serves as a model for future collaborations between community groups and nonprofit organizations, working together to improve local energy security.
