This capacity represents over 54% of the country’s total installed power capacity, which is approximately 552 GW. The achievement highlights India's rapid progress towards its climate action targets and the goal of reaching 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable energy development. The non-fossil fuel capacity includes a diverse mix of energy sources: solar power accounts for 164.59 GW, wind power comprises 58.14 GW, hydro power amounts to 57.24 GW, bio-power contributes 11.75 GW, and nuclear power adds 8.78 GW. The notable growth in these sectors underscores the effectiveness of government policies and initiatives aimed at enhancing renewable energy generation.

Solar energy, in particular, has emerged as a key growth engine, expanding from just 2.8 GW in 2014 to around 165 GW in 2026. The wind energy sector has also experienced significant growth, increasing from 21 GW in 2014 to over 58 GW. This growth is exemplified by the record installation of 55.29 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity during the 2025-26 fiscal year, with solar power contributing 44.6 GW and wind power adding 6 GW. The increasing reliance on renewable energy sources reflects a broader commitment to reducing carbon emissions and enhancing energy security. India's clean energy transition is supported by key policy enablers, such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which promotes domestic manufacturing of high-efficiency solar modules.

This initiative has seen the enlisted capacity for solar PV modules surpass 200 GW, a remarkable increase from just 2.3 GW in 2014. The transformation in renewable energy capacity is critical for India's industrial competitiveness and energy independence, positioning the nation as a potential global hub for green technologies. Looking ahead, India aims to continue its rapid expansion of non-fossil fuel energy sources. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is also focusing on deep industrial decarbonization and aims to implement the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which will further enhance India's position in the global clean energy landscape. As the country continues to invest in renewable technologies, it is poised to make significant strides in achieving its climate goals and fostering a sustainable energy ecosystem.
